International PhD Colloquium

The International Ph.D. Colloquium was held on August 29, 2022, as one of the series of pre-congress WPSC-APSA 2022. International Ph.D. The Colloquium was attended by 39 presenters of doctoral students from 18 countries around the world, a total of 16 presenters attended the WPSC-APSA 2022 in Bali, and others joined virtually. The overall number of participants who attended the International Ph.D. Colloquium, both on-site and virtual, reached eighty people.

International Ph.D. Colloquium is a discussion forum for students who are pursuing doctoral studies by presenting their research, where at the end of the presentation session, the discussions consisting of experts in the field of planning provide feedback to the presenters. Through these activities, students can get various inputs and new ideas for the research they are doing, not only from the discussion but also from fellow presenters or participants who attend each panel. In addition, the International Ph.D. Colloquium also functions as a medium to increase international networking for doctoral students and planning schools that offer doctoral study programs.

The International Ph.D. Colloquium consists of lecture sessions, panel sessions, and sharing sessions. The Lecture Session includes an Introductory Lecture entitled “Logical Rhetoric and Logical Sequence in Writing Chapters of Ph.D. Thesis,” which was delivered by Prof. Ismail bin Said from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and moderated by Prof. Bakti Setiawan from Gadjah Mada University. Furthermore, the second material was delivered by Prof. Liu Jian from Tsinghua University on “Research Paradigm in Planning,” and acting as a moderator is Prof. Fumihiko Nakamura from Tokyo University. Meanwhile, the third lecture session was held after the parallel session ended, entitled “Method in Planning Research,” delivered by Prof. Michael Batty of University College London and Prof. Zorica Nedovic-Budic of University College Dublin as moderator. The enthusiasm of the participants in the Lecture Session was quite high, evidenced by the large number of participants who were active in discussions with the speakers. The Sharing Session was delivered by Isti Hidayati, Ph.D. (Gadjah Mada University), to share experiences and provide motivation and enthusiasm for students pursuing doctoral education with Dr. Tri Mulyani Sunarharum (Gadjah Mada University) as moderator.

The panel session is the core activity of the International Ph.D. Colloquium consists of nine sessions, which are divided into hybrid and fully online modes. Each consists of 4-5 students who are grouped according to research topics to make presentations and present two international discussants, namely professors and experts related to the research field. A total of 39 Ph.D. presented their research in which some of the students also played an active role as moderators in the group panel, which was then followed by a discussion session with the discussants and participants present at each panel. This activity is useful as part of the global milestone for the Ph.D. in completing his research.
