While planning scholars and practitioners have an enormous interest in larger urban and metropolitan regions, transformation in rural areas and small islands has also been very dynamic. The transformation corresponds to, among other things, changes in agricultural systems and livelihoods due to modernization, urban-rural and core-periphery interconnectivity, as well as information and communication/digital technologies which potentially accelerate the ongoing changes. This clearly implies significant challenges for regional policy and planning. This track welcomes submissions that discuss the driving forces as well as implications of the dynamic rural and small island transformation in this globalizing world. We would also like to look into innovative solutions to the challenges arising from the dynamic transformation that emerge in various geographical and socio-economic contexts.
