Land, housing, and settlements topics are three among other complex issues in Indonesia. The reality that those aspects are strongly related to each other suggests that the problem cannot be solved or managed by a single discipline. It can also be indicated from the experiences that the consideration of land, housing, and settlements in many places in the world requires an approach that is different from one to another. Therefore, the study of the topics under these three umbrellas is necessary to be conducted. In addition, the complexity of the knowledge requires continuous effort and collaborative thought. It is also be suggested that the best practices and lessons learned can be formulated to construct theories and practices of land, housing, and settlements policy and management based on characteristics of respective nations and cases.

The discussion within these themes is proposed to be collected through research themes in various sub-topics. The sub-topic includes the themes such as housing planning and design, social and public housing, rental housing, vertical housing, land banking, settlement planning, and so on. To confirm the study, it can also be suggested to gain users’ experience as the end target of these land, housing, and settlement issues. Therefore, the themes of perception, response, adaptation and adjustment, and others, are also proposed to be included. These two inter-related thoughts will be channeled to have a thorough or comprehensive result which will be beneficial to synthesize alternative strategies for sustainable approaches and a better future.
