Although basically planning deals with the future, it is always necessary to consider the importance of natural and/or man-made cultural heritage as part of the development. Sustainability in urban development should be based not only on economic, social, and environmental measures but also on the cultural dimension. Urban heritage has acquired an increasingly important status in all regions of the world not only as a category but also as an object of public policies and of private investment. In planning practices, urban conservation is linked to an approach or procedure that focuses on the quality of the urban environment by designing a program to safeguard cities and urban areas from environmental and visual pollution. In fact, conservation and development cannot be seen as a dichotomy. Instead, conservation and development should go hand in hand in sustaining the use of resources by keeping in mind the need of future generations. Various approaches have been developed, but new challenges will continue to grow that will provide us with opportunities to develop new and contemporary methods for urban conservation within the context of the general aim to improve the quality of life.
