Despite its benefits for human civilization, urbanization has brought an enormous consequence to the natural environment in cities and regions. Uncontrolled rapid urbanization leads to the conversion of the natural environment in urban areas. The carrying capacity of the urban environment is often neglected and compromised by market demand for urban development. This marginalization of the natural environment weakens its environmental services for cities and declines urban living comfortability. It contributes to habitat loss for urban species and disconnects urban ecosystems. Meanwhile, the high intensity of urban activities such as transportation, industry, and consumption also provide negative excesses for cities through air and water pollutions and accumulation of waste which have implications for public health. Recent pandemic crises and climate change add complexity in dealing with urbanization. The sustainability of urban and regional development in the future is strongly influenced by its effectiveness in responding to the nexus of the environment, health, and climate change. The ability of the city governments to control the anticipated trends in these three key themes has a significant contribution to creating a better quality of urban life and ensuring the sustainability of urban ecosystems for a healthier and just society. This track welcomes various thoughts and research in shaping a healthier urban environment and society. It opens for sharing of research and ideas related to the restoration of natural environments, nature-based solutions, and ecosystem-based adaptation in the context of cities and regions. It also appreciates research and sharing of knowledge on policy and practice related to urban climate change mitigation and new normal life in the post-pandemic. Effective policies to harmonize environmental protection and urban development are also the interest of this track.
